With the big news braking late evening yesterday from Deadline.com, on Sony and Disney failed their negotiations to keep Spider-Man in the MCU and with Kevin Feige no longer having imput on the Spider-Man live action films from Sony. Many fans all over the world express their frustration with both Sony and Disney failing to keep Spider-Man MCU movies to continue. Sony released their statement yesterday on the breaking news to try and salvage what’s left of their public image. Sony’s public statement on their decision to end their negotiations.
“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’ s involvement in the franchise,” Sony continues “We are dissapoited, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.” We hope this might change in the future, but understand that many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added properties – do not all time to work on IP they do not own. Sony’s final comments, “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
While Sony wants to say Kevin Feige is busy with new obligations after Disney bought Fox. The main reason why negotiations end is because of money. Disney wants the future Spider-Man movies to be finance of a 50/50 split from both companies on making future Spider-Man movies, and profit money while Kevin Feige as the lead producer and creative control over the Spider-Man movies.
Since the news broke yesterday evening Sony’s stock took a hit yesterday according to Yahoo Finances.
As a Comic book fan it’s very dissapoiting news especially how the MCU Spider-Man ended on a cliff hanger in his last MCU movie. What’s Next for Spider-Man?
This is the billion dollars question for Spider-Man fans. It’s going to be very interesting to see what Sony does next with Spider-Man, because Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is wrapped around the MCU in terms of his story, and connection to Tony Stark. In my opinion there’s no way they can continue with this version of Spider-Man with out the MCU. It’s been reported from many websites including Deadline, that Sony is developing 2 more Spider-Man live action movies with Tom Holland’s to continue as Spider-Man. There is no announcement for those titled Spider-Man movies.
In my opinion I believe Sony will relaunch Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in his own universe but is shared with the Tom Hardys Venom and Jared Leto’s Morpheus franchises. I think that is what they will be trying to do, and with Venom 2 set to begin production soon don’t be shock for a true Spiderman cameo at the ending credits from the Venom sequel. No word if director Jon Watts who directed the first two Tom Holland Spider-Man movies will be back as director.
What kind of Affects will it have on Miles Morales Spider-Man?
This was one of my many thoughts I had when the news broke. Sony does indeed own the Spider-Man movie rights but that doesn’t mean they have the Miles Morales Spider-Man rights too since he was created less than 10 years ago by Marvel Comics. Sony never had a contract deal to do anything with the Miles character since he is apart of Disney/Marvel and was the center peice when Disney and Sony made their first deal in Sping of 2015 in order to get Spider-Man in the MCU, with Kevin Feige as lead input for the live action Spider-Man movies.
That first deal allowed Sony to use Miles Morales and the many alternate realities of Spider-Man and Spider-Qwen in the animated movie Spider-Verse. There s no news yet on how this affects the sequels to the Spider-Verse sequels in animation.
With not having a new deal with Disney it means Sony goes back to following their original contract for the Spider-Man live action movie rights contract when they bought the movie rights back in 1999 from Marvel. Their original contract has Spider-Man must be a white male character, and must be Peter Benjamin Parker that follows the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko stories base on the Marvel Comic Books. It’s old news and was first reported by Dave McNary from Vanity.com in June 2015 after Sony’s emails were leaked. MY FINAL THOUGHTS
Us the fans are the ones who took a giant blow to this news. With the crictal and financial successful Spider-Man: Far from Home coming out to blue ray and digital very soon this will probably be the closes to having a great Spider-Man on the big screen for a long time, because the last time Sony was incharge of creative control they almost destroyed their Spider-Man movie franchise with the disaster Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie. Who knows what kind of damage they will do to the Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, because Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield’s potrayls ended poorly on screen.
