She-Hulk was one of the Marvel series from Disney Plus I was curious about because it’s the closes thing to a sequel of The Incredible Hulk and Daredevil will be featured in the series! The series centers around Jennifer Walters played by Tatiana Maslany, who is Bruce Banner’s cousin. Bruce’s blood is transmitted to her after a bad accident and she became She-Hulk. This series is to be heavily comedy with an Ally McBeal and Harvey Birdman vibe to it.
PROS
I love the casting decision of Tatiana Maslany as Jen Walters/She-Hulk because she has a charismatic witty sense of humor, that works for Marvel’s direction for She-Hulk and for the direction they have been forcing down on their audiences on everything since Avengers Infinity War which was the pinnacle of Marvel Studios.
I enjoyed the chemistry between her and Mark Ruffalo who plays her cousin Bruce Banner. It works very well on screen. I was happy to see we got a lot of Bruce Banner/Smart Hulk in the first episode.
CONS
The first 10 minutes are all over the place and get choppy throughout the first episode with scene jumping and not explaining anything of how did this happen like we missed something. For example, when she transforms into She-Hulk in Bruce’s lab. The goal after that was how to get her back in human form. In the next scene, we see her back in human form without explanation or acknowledgment of how did that happened.
I get a lot of Thor Love and Thunder vibe from the first episode of She-Hulk. There’s a lot of over-the-top comedy that not all of it will work. The character Jenn/She-Hulk is too similar to Deadpool’s character. I get She-Hulk breaks the 4th wall in the comic books but Deadpool did it first outside of the comic books and is now in the public domain of doing that.
The CGI is a mixed bag still. There are some good spots and there are some bad spots with the CG. There are woke elements that will take people out of the series for a short time. The bickering between Bruce and Jenn gets annoying fast. Some of the comedy that’s used is based on popular memes that are mentioned to be funny in the series. Which is now an eye roll.
OVERALL 6.5/10
She-Hulk is off to a mixed-bag start. With no interesting plot or surprising storyline. There’s no story of struggle or obstacles for Jenn/She-Hulk to overcome yet. Other than more bad comedy and Robert Downey Jr/ Ryan Reynolds witty humor that Marvel Studios continue to throw at their audiences.
It’s not a good start but it’s only the first episode as it’s supposed to get better from here.
