REVIEW: Candyman 2021

Candyman 2021 film is a sequel to the 1992 horror suspense film with the same name Candyman staring Tony Todd as the main role. The sequel film star Yahya Abuela as Anthony McCoy, Teyonah Parris, and Tony Todd. The film is dirct by The Marvels film director Nia DaCosta who makes her directing debut. MINOR SPOILERS

PROS

The first parts of the film will have audiences invested in the sequel. The film does a good job making this feel like direct sequel that has deep connections to the first one. I enjoyed Teyonah Parris who plays Anthony McCoy’s girlfriend. She is supportive to her boyfriends art work and plays the common sense in the film.

I thought Yahya Abdul-Mateen 2nd was good in the lead role. He did a good job carrying the suspense and learning about what happen in the first film and how he connected to the events in the first film. Other supportive cast who was good was Coleman Domingo who played a local and witness to the events of the first Candyman film.

CONS

I found the film to be very disjointed, and falls a part in the 3rd act of the film. Since Jordan Peele was involved in the script and produced process expect force political messages that might turn some audience off.

Don’t expect the sequel be as gory like the first film. The film is hurt by pushing the return of Tony Todd as Candyman. Don’t expect to see much of Candyman as Tony Todd in this.

OVERALL 5.5/10

The sequel film is inspired by suspense film The Fly and horror sequel A Nightmare on Elm St 2. There’s some good moments but not enough for the disappointing sequel.
