With the news reporting that Birds of Prey movie might not reach financial expectations for it’s opening weekend of 45 to 50 million dollars. some people are quickly calling it a financial flop… In my opinion the people who are calling it a flop did not like the movie, because I have read their reviews about the movie. I enjoyed the movie and it is a movie for everyone to enjoy, because Harley Quinn is a fun character and Cathy Yan, Margot Robbie, and Christina Hodson all did their job to make a fun comic book movie with action comedy. One of the issue the movie had leading up to its release date is that it did not have a lot of financial marketing support by Warner Brothers to sell people to go see this movie. Obviously the title called Birds of Prey does not help to grab interest for people to go see this movie besides DC fans who know who the Birds of Prey are or know the lead for this movie is Harley Quinn. Yes the title should’ve been called Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey. It’s a very simple title who knows if this was Warner Brother’s marketing team or Christina Hodson who wrote the script had some over thinking to what to call the title staring Harley Quinn here. However with critics enjoying the movie base on the current Rotten Tomatoes score of 81 out of 250 reviews, and audiences score currently sitting at 84 out of 2524 people.
Unfortunately it has been a slow comic book movie or tv week for some people an they are looking for something to report and this is the big news to latch on to. Here is a fact Warner Brother spent under 90 million to make the movie. That tells me this was a small risk like the Shazam movie was. Zachary Levi’s Shazam made over 300 million dollars with a similar budget that Birds of Prey have and it was still a financial success. Bumblebee take home was about 25 million its opening weekend and it made over 400 million world wide when that movie’s run ends. My point is the movie will turn a big profit in. It will either make 250 million or over 300 million world wide because of the positive word to mouth from audiences like myself who have seen the movie. Many of the Blumhouse horror movies budget of 90 million dollars turned in a 200 to 300 million dollar profit as a financial successes. I am expecting the Birds of Prey movie will do something close to that.
I am sure this is not the last time we see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn since she is in James Gunn Suicide Squad movie, or the DC Film’s Birds of Prey group. Warner Brother’s made a small investment for this movie so it will break a profit in and I am sure they are looking into doing another Harley Quinn focus movie. Hopefully the next time we see her it will be with Posion Ivy in a Harley and Ivy movie. Since that is what Margot Robbie and Christina Hodson has express about doing next for Harley Quinn while they are promoting the movie.
Overall like all comic book movies from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and Image Comics I root for all of their character properties to be successful critically and financially because it opens the door for more characters to get their due on the big screen.
My Comic Book Opinion
