Birds of Prey: Movie Review

Birds of Prey film is the forth DC movie post Justice League and under Walter Hamada regime. Birds of Prey stars Margot Robbie who returns as the infamous and popular Harley Quinn. Staring with her is Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Black Canary, Rosie Perez as Rene Montoya, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, and Ewan McGregor as the main villain Black Mask or Ronan Sionis. The movie is about Harley Quinn looking for her emancipation after breaking up with the Joker. She comes across in a cross fire between Black Mask looking for his Diamond. (MINOR SPOILERS)

The Birds of Prey film respects the comicbook material while introducing something new. Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, but Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and Jurnee Smolett-Bell as Dianah Lance/Black Canery steals the spotlight. I wanted to see more of this version of Black Canary as she is inspired by the Injustice League Black Canary and Chuck Dixon Black Canary character influences. Any time there’s a scene with Jurnee Smollet-Bell she steals it away from Harley Quinn. Ewan McGregor take on Black Mask is fantastic and you will hate him and root against him.

The action is balls to walls fantastic. Tons of great fight scenes and crayness in one. The decision to go with John Wick’s Chad Stahelski as the second unit director and stunt coordinator was a brilliant move. The humor in the film is executed perfectly for the film. Christina Hodson knocks it out of the park again after writing the Bumblebee film. Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn like Robert Downey is Tony Stark. She is fantastic and does a great job carrying her own movie.

Act one is choppy and has some paste issues in the beginning. There is a slow build up to Harley Quinn teaming up with the Birds of Prey team. We do not get enough of the supporting cast but the actress do a great job with the amount of screen time they have. I wasn’t a fan of the new creative take of Cassandra Cain. It would be better if the introduce a new character for the key role in the movie. Don’t expect a lot of Batman references or mentions or any of his rogues gallery besides Joker. The focus is Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey. There is some cheesiness with Huntress’s dialogue that is not executed right.

Dispite a few flaws Birds of Prey accomplished what it set out to be. It is a great action pack fun popcorn film to go watch in theaters. Director Cathy Yan and the people who worked on this film did a fantastic job. Its worth checking out in theaters. DC and Walter Hamada from WarnerMedia knocks it out again for the fourth straight time since Justice League.
