2019 DC Comic Con: Recap

Even though Warner Brothers did not make an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, besides promoting the IT Chapter 2 movie. The TV department from Warner Brothers, and the DC Universe app grabbed the spot light at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con 2019. We also had a 80 year celebration of Batman’s existences, and the first character to enter the new San Diego Comic-Con hall of fame.

Batman 80 years Celebration and Comic Con HoF

Batman has been around since 1939 and was introduced in Detective Comics issue 27, and has been in every medium ever since. From the serials of the 40s, to Adam West Batman 66 of Batmania, and into pop culture minds. To get rejuvenated from Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams in the 70s to Frank Miller’s TDKR and taken seriously by Burton’s Batman 89, to Batman The animated series, and Batman Beyond from Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’ s Arkham video game series. To get a proper remake by Nolans movie masterpiece The Dark Knight trilogy that respect the comic book source mythology, and Ben Affleck who brought the Batman straight out of the Comic books with his portrayal in Snyder’s BvS: Dawn of Justice.Batman and his world will out live us all, and will be presented in a new adaption from Matt Reeves new Batman film starring Robert Pattinson as Batman in a detective noir take coming out in June of 2021. Batman is the most recognizable character ever around the world, and deserve an 80 year celebration and to be in the Comic Con hall of fame. Batman will be getting a walk of fame next year which is deserving as well. The 80 year celebration at the Comic-Con is deserving an recognizing the creaters who contributed in help to make him what Batman is today. Here’s to another 80 years!

DC on CW

So much news came out from the CW DCTV department. We got a first look at Melissa Benoist’s new Supergirl zuit to Batwoman’s pilot screening on Thursday night which wasn’t viewed positive unfortunately. We got our first trailers to this upcoming DCCW seasons, and giant announcements about The Crisis on Infinite Earth event crossover that will happen at the end of 2019 and will end at the start of 2020.

ARROW: S8

Arrow is back for a final season of only 10 episode of season 8. Season 8 of Arrow is expected to lead straight into Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover. Many fans expect Oliver Queen played by Stephen Amell to meet his end in the crossover event. The principal cast of David Ramsey as John Diggle, Colton Hayes as Roy Harper, Katie Cassidy Rodgers as Laurel Lance/Black Canary, and many characters from the past few seasons as well, will be part of the main cast in season 8. Tom Welling was announce to be in a guest role but who he is playing remains classified. Arrow was the first DCCW series that came out in 2012 and created the Arrowverse that spawn 5 DC TV series that connect to one another. I fell off of Arrow during the middle of Season 4, but I had new interest in it when Season 6 had Manu Bennet back as Deathstroke. Check out the season 8 trailer below.

SUPERGIRL: S5

I havent watch much of supergirl , but normally when Superman appears ill pay more attention. Supergirl Season 5 will focus on the fallout between Supergirl and Lena Luther from events in season 4. Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist, and her principle cast is Mehcad Brooks/James Olson, Chyler Leigh/Alex Danvers, Jesse Rath/Braniac 5, and David Hardwood/Martian Manhunter. Returning character from earlier seasons is Jeremy Jordan/ Winslow Schott. Jon Cryer will return as Lex Luther, who is really good at playing the iconic villain. Checkout the trailer below.

DC’s LEGENDS of TOMORROW: S4

Legends of Tomorrow has been a mix to a lot of people including myself. Even though Brandon Routh’s Atom, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance, with Matt Ryan as John Constantine part of the series. The show has had a difficult time to bring in viewers. The show will be returning in January 2020. Caity Lotz tease Sarah Lance will have a super power that she will learn how to use over the course of season 5. No trailer for season 5 at Comic Con because the show won’t be back until January 2020. Here is a video interview by TVline who did an interview with the cast for season 5 of Legends of Tomorrow, since Season 5 is started to shoot currently.

BLACK LIGHTNING: S3

Season three of Black Lightning will be returning this fall as well. This is a great series from the beginning of season one. Black Lightning is the most underrated superhero show out there. With how Season two ended, expect a very interesting season 3. Comic-Con did not have a trailer for season 3, but shows a recap of season 2, that I will not put on here. Season 3 is quietly under wrapped. Season 3 is expected to be airing October 21 2019. The show is not part of the Arrowverse yet, but rumors out there it could change after Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover. Here’s a interview the cast from Back Lighting did for Entertainment weekly at this year’s Comic Con 2019.

BATWOMAN: s1

Batwoman is expected to air this fall on Sunday with Supergirl. The pilot episode was premiered at Comic-Con on Thursday night last week. The word to mouth is very mixed about the pilot. Ruby Rose is viewed as a great choice for Kate Kane/Batwoman, however the pilot doesn’t add anything new that stands out when comparing it to shows like Arrow and the Flash. The pilot episode and a few after it will be flashbacks building Kate Kane’s Batwoman origin story. The first few episodes will be before DC’s Else Worlds Crossover event that premired last year. They announced one of Batman’s villains Hush will play a big role in season one. The reception of Batwoman is split by audiences. I am hoping the show brings in the first live action version of Jason Todd/Red Hood into the series since this takes place decades after Batman’s been gone. I am a fan of the Greg Rocka and J.H Williams version of the character from the Comic Books I am looking forward to see the first season of Batwoman. It was announced that Burt Ward will make an appearance on the show.

THE FLASH: S6

Of all of the DCCW series The Flash has been the only show I have consistently been watching since the pilot episode aired in 2014. Season 5 was a bit mixed in the early episodes with Cicada, but how season 5 ended a very good conclusion between a battle with The Flash and The Reverse Flash. We get our first built up to Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover in the final episode of The Flash, who is a central character in the original comic book story. Season 6 of The Flash stars Grant Gustin in the title role with return of the main cast members of Candice Patton/Iris West, Jesse L.Martin/ Joe West, Carlos Valdes/Cisco Ramon, Danielle Panabaker/ Caitlin Snow, Tom Cavanagh/ Harrison Wells & Reverse Flash, and Hartley Sawyer/Ralph Digby. Season 6 is set to build to Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover, with Tom Cavanagh playing Pariah from the Crisis on Infinite Earth comic book storyline. Season 6 will introduce the next big villain entering season 6 with Bloodwork played by Sendhil Ramamurthy. Checkout the trailer below for season 6.

CRISIS on INFINITE EARTHS

The biggest official news from DCTV from Comic-Con last weekend is Brandon Routh will reprise his role as Superman from Superman Returns, but an older version with the Kingdom Come look of Superman. Tyler Hoechlin will be back as Superman, Elizabeth Tulloch will return as Lois Lane, and introducing their son. Jon Cryer is expected to be back as Lex Luthor in Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover. The crossover will be a 5 parts. The first 3 parts will be in December 2019, and the final 2 parts will air in early of January 2020. Comic-Con gave DC fans their first look at the Anti-Monitor played by LaMonica Garrett who will still play The Monitor from the Elseworld Crossover.

A new report from a website called cosmicbook.com, by Matt McGloin has a report that Tom Welling will reprising his Smallville character as Clark Kent, Lynda Carter As an older Wonder Woman from the 70’s, and Burt Ward as an older Robin from Batman 66 to be involved in Crisis on Infinite Earth crossover. Its rumored to be cameo-ed only, however it’s only reported rumor NOT officially announced by Greg Berlanti or by WBTV department. This is expected to be the biggest crossover ever, that DC and Warner Brothers has ever done on any medium. The website has a history of getting reports wrong. Here’s the link to their website below.

https://cosmicbook.news/titans-crisis-infinite-earths

Tom Welling and Burt Ward will be guest staring on Arrow and Batwoman. Lynda Carter guest star last year on Supergirl. There is a very strong possibility of this being true. With John Wesley Shipp return as the 90’s Flash in Else-world Crossover last year. I hope the 90’s version Flash has a bigger role in this event compared to elseworld crossover last year. This will be must see TV for comic book fans and DC fans to watch.

HBO’s WATCHMEN & PENNYWORTH

The new Watchmen series is set to be release on HBO sometime in October of 2019. The first full trailer was release on Saturday at the DCTV panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The trailer revealed our first look at Dr. Manhattan, who will appear in the series. We do see shots of Jeremy Irons as Ozymandias, Regina King who plays Angela Abraham, we see tons of surprising footage. In my opinion I believe this version of The Watchmen is a sequel to the classic Alan Moore’s Watchmen graphic novel story, because we see our first shot of Dr. Manhattan siting on Mars , just like he did at the end of the Watchmen story. The other reason it look like Ozymandias plan backfired on him because Rorschach’s notebook was brought to the public eye. It does feel that Walters death created a cult of Rorschach’s spreading chaos a couple of decades later against the police. We get our first look at Laurie Blake, who is know as Silk Spectre but as an FBI agent and much older from her comic book counterpart. Laurie is using her biological father’s the Comedian’s last name Blake, so it is possible she is hiding her past. The trailer feels like a sequel to the Watchmen story, the more audiences will seethe footage. We see a shot of Nite Owl’s Owl-ship known as Archie which is interesting. Who knows if this might be a flash back. Check out the trailer below.

The Pennyworth Pilot was aired on Thursday night comic-con last week and is getting a giant positive reviews from critics and fans. It is currently at a 71 score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is describe as James Bond version for Alfred’s past before he became a butler and serve Bruce Wayne. This is respecting Alfred’s past in the comic book mythology. I am not interested in this but it is set to be release on July 28, 2019 on the Flix channel if anyone is interested. Checkout the trailer below.

DC UNIVERSE

DC Universe app had a panel Saturday night at Comic-Con this year. The panel was scheduled to have Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Joshua Orpin as Connor Kent, and Esai Morales as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. As seen below from Joshua Orpin Facebook account to confirm they were expect to show at panel to promote Titans Season 2. Unfortunately because of the death from one of stunt man on the series who died on set in an accident. The schedule panel with the acrors was cancelled.

However DCU did announce Season 2 is expected to be released this September 6th 2019, on the DCU streaming service. They did show two images of the upcoming season 2 series. They are not offical images but they show no spoilers. Someone from the panel post them on the internet. The first image is a flashback of the original Titans an our first look at Aqualad/Garth played by Drew Van Acker.

As you can see the image is a bit blurry and Donna Troy/Wonder Girl is cut out from the image. You can see Aqualad will have a colorful suit.

The next unofficial image is our first look at Deathstroke, who will be played by Esai Morales.

As anyone could see these are not the official image. The photo is a bit blurry and dark on his face. He does look like Deadshot because of the red eye in the photo but image is not clear on the face to show a clear look. I’m sure we will see offical looks and a trailer by the end of August. It’s exciting to learn we will be getting season 2 of Titans soon. No offical word how many episodes season 2 will have. With the amount of characters in season 2 getting introduced. Hopefully it will be 13 episodes this time.

HARLEY QUINN ANIMATED SERIES

We got our first official trailer for the new Harley Quinn animated series that’s expected to come in the late fall. It’s stars Kaley Cuoco as Harley Quinn, Lake Bell as Poision Ivy, Alan Tudyk as The Joker, Diedrich Bader returns to voice Batman, and Christopher Meloni voices Commissioner Jim Gordan. Harley Quinn animated series will be rated for mature audience only. See the trailer below.

DOOM PATROL: S2

DCU announce Season 2 of Doom Patrol. Season 2 was rumored to be on the HBO Maxx streaming series but will debut on the DCU app in Spring of 2020. This is the best show on the streaming service in my opinion . I highly recommend audience to check it out. I’m very excited to see the show come back. No official announcement on how many episodes but we will be getting season 2 thankfully as most people like myself were concern it would be a one off.

YOUNG JUSTICE: S4

DCU announce they will be moving forward with a 4th season of one of the most popular animated series out there in Young Justice. Nothing else about season 4 was mention but they were working on it as they announced it. The 2nd part of season 3 is now streaming and a new episode is release every Tuesday.

NO STARGIRL

We did not have a Stargirl panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. The show will not be tease until sometime early 2020. The JSA is expected to have a big presence from Stargirl series.

DC ANIMATION

Here is an unofficial image of the upcoming Wonder Woman: Bloodline animated movie. The DC animation will be moving forward with this animation style with the DC animated movie series. Wonder Woman: Bloodline is expected to come out the later part of 2019.

DC ANIMATED MOVIES in 2020

DC animation announced a Superman: Man of Tomorrow animated movie. The original story is base on Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee comic book story. Animation department announced Superman: Red Son and Batman: Death in the Family animated movies for 2020.

OVERALL

DC animation and TV department created a lot of exciting buzz at this year’s comic con. Sadly because Warner Brothers did not have a Hall H presentation for Wonder Woman 84 and Birds of Prey panels to built excitement for fans. Both movies are set to be release less than a year. There is positive buzz from both movies, and I feel like Warner Brothers drop the ball with the market to build early excitement for the two DC movies that will be out next year. It’s disappointing they had nothing to show for fans from these two movies. Hopefully we hear some exciting news about these two movies at New York Comic-Con 2019.
